Blues, soul and funk musician Henry Turner, Jr. has used his musical platform to celebrate philanthropists and musicians in the Baton Rouge area. The city, aware of how much Turner has contributed to its music scene, is awarding him with the 2018 Slim Harpo Blues Award. Turner was named an “Ambassador” for his efforts to represent and share his enthusiasm for blues with music enthusiasts. It is an incredible honor that he shares with other 2018 recipients, Shannon Williford (“Legend”) and Mamie & Smokehouse Porter (“Pioneers”). Previous recipients of the Slim Harpo Music Award include Van Morrison, Keith Richards, Alvin Batiste, Buddy Guy and many others.

The Slim Harpo Blues Awards Ceremony is named for James Moore, a.k.a Slim Harpo, a Baton Rouge jazz musician who went on to popularize Louisiana roots music and influence the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Van Morrison and more. The Awards celebrate individuals who have followed in the footsteps of Slim Harpo, sharing their passion for blues and supporting Baton Rouge musicians.
