Southern Maryland Blues Festival to help benefit two Southern Maryland Charities

No Comments Latest Blues News

Chesapeake Bay Events, Inc. (CBE) is pleased to announce that it has selected Safe Harbor, Inc. and Special Love, Inc. as its primary beneficiaries of the 2nd Annual Southern Maryland Blues Festival, to be held August 23- 24, 2014.

Safe Harbor, located in Prince Frederick, Maryland, provides help to battered women and children in need of essential services during an extremely difficult period in their life. It further helps those families to become self-sufficient by providing counseling and training. Linda Kelley, Chairman of Safe Harbor, Inc. added “We appreciate the generosity of Chesapeake Bay Events in helping us to increase awareness about domestic violence, and to provide essential services to abused women and their children — Because it shouldn’t hurt to go home.

Special Love, Inc. operates a summer camp in Leonardtown, MD for the siblings of children who have cancer and other life threatening illnesses. The siblings of children with cancer are often a forgotten group; they suffer not only the pain of watching their brother or sister struggle with illness, but very often receive much less attention than most kids because of the upsetting nature of this disease on families. Camp offers them a respite and an opportunity to enjoy a week with kids going through the same thing that they are.

Both charities will have the opportunity to sell at the festival, collect donations from the attendees, receive all proceeds from a guitar raffle and receive a portion of all of the net proceeds from the event.

Safe HarborAbout Safe Harbor, Inc.

Safe Harbor, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which  evolved from the Shelter Task Force in the late 1980’S and early 1990’S when it was recognized that Calvert County women and children who were victims of domestic violence had no place to turn, no safe place to be.

Our mission is to support the operations and programs of Safe Harbor, the abused persons’ shelter in Calvert County, Maryland which houses those women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.  To that end, we conduct fund raising activities to support the shelter and its clients, as well as public awareness campaigns to shine a light on the pervasive problem of domestic violence.

Safe Harbor, Inc. has no paid staff.  All the Board members are volunteers who receive no compensation other than the satisfaction of knowing that we are part of a greater effort to address domestic violence.

Brass CampAbout BRASS Camp

When a sister or brother is diagnosed with cancer, siblings’ lives are changed forever.  Sometimes feeling guilty, invisible, or ignored, healthy siblings experience the same upheaval as their parents. But as children, they may have less capacity to cope.

Our BRASS (BRothers And SiSters) Camp offers activities like campfires, canoeing, and sports, along with camaraderie and peer empathy — an open dialog among campers and counselors to ensure siblings going through the cancer experience are enveloped in the same support system as their parents and their sick brothers or sisters.

BRASS Camp meets at Camp Maria in Leonardtown, MD, a traditional camp facility that sits on the beautiful Breton Bay from July 26th to July 30th.
