Since 2008, the online magazine, Blues Blast Magazine, has been hosting the Blues Blast Music Awards to honor contemporary blues artists and their recordings. Indie artists as well as artists signed with major labels are considered.
Each year, artists and their labels are invited to make submissions to the BBMA to ensure that their recordings can be considered. Submissions is not required, but consideration is not certain without it. Submitted recordings must be released between April 1st of the prior year to March 31st of the award year. Other categories that are based on observations of artists over the prior year (eg. Male Blues Artist, Female Blues Artist, Blues Band of the Year, or the Rising Star Award) are not limited to these dates.
Thirty nominators review submissions and consider nominations, and submit them during May. Nominations are announced after May 31st. Once the nominees are chosen, selections of music by the BBMA nominees are posted on a listening page on the Blues Blast website where Fans can listen to all the blues artists nominated.
Fans can vote for their favorite blues artists and recordings from July 15 to August 31, 2013. Voting is free and only requires a valid, confirmed email address.
