What’s cookin’
Bluesman, guitarist, singer, songwriter Larry Garner has
performed at festivals and venues all around the world. Raised
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this multi-award winning, Louisiana
Blues Hall of Fame inductee and fi ve-time Blues Music Award
nominee also loves to BBQ, as well as enjoy his mama’s tried-
and-true, irresistible pie.
Larry shares, “When I asked my mama for her recipe she
said, ‘It ain’t nothing special, it’s all in the potato crop. If you get
good sweet potatoes, it’s hard not to make a good pie.”’
mama Garner’s Sweet Potato Pie
2 1/2 cups cooked mashed
2 1/2 cups cooked mashed
quality sweet potatoes
1 3/4 cups of sugar
1 stick butter (melted)
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
½ cup evaporated milk
2 tbsp fl our
1 (8-inch) unbaked pie shell
Peel and boil the sweet potatoes until tender and mashable.
Drain and mash until smooth. Mix mashed potatoes and
sugar together. Add melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, spices,
evaporated milk and fl our and stir until smooth. Pour into 8-inch
pie shell and bake at 350 degrees for 50 - 60 minutes or until
knife inserted in center comes out clean. Pie serves six to eight
normal eaters or one or two folks with a sweet tooth. “A pie
usually stays around my house two days max,” says Larry.
