I’m Changing, was produced by Mobile, Alabama-based, Mississippi native, blues, roots and gospel singer, guitarist Lisa Mills along with bassist Ian Jennings. Mills exemplifies the deeply embedded Southern musical influences that come together in unpredictable ways on I’m Changing with this follow-up to her internationally praised 2010 release Tempered in Fire. From bluesy, to breathy to edgy, reviews call her one of the best singer/songwriters on the scene today.
Recorded primarily at Back Door Studios in Mobile, the album showcases Mills and an impressive cast of musicians including Rick Hirsch and drummer T.K Lively of Wet Willie fame, as well as guitarist Corky Hughes (Bo Diddley, Black Oak Arkansas) and drummer John Milham. Bassist Ian Jennings has a host of world-class recording credentials including work on albums with Jeff Beck, Van Morrison and Tom Jones.
As its title implies, I’m Changing is actually a re-constructed new version of the tracks Lisa recorded and released in 2005, with the added benefit of a more pure expression of her artistic desires and abilities. More importantly the new project put in the hands of groundbreaking producer Trina Shoemaker, the first woman to win the Grammy Award for album engineering (Sheryl Crow).
The dozen tracks on the new CD include 10 originals, plus covers of Rev. Robert Wilkins’ “Wish I Was In Heaven (Sittin’ Down)” and the Jimi Hendrix classic, “Little Wing.” There are two fully re-recorded tracks on the album: “Take My Troubles Away” and “Tell Me,” and three new songs: “Rain In The Summertime” and “Eyes So Blue.” All of these are originals.
Lisa Mills has been described as, “a full-throated female Otis Redding, with some Muscle Shoals and Nashville country thrown in for good measure.” Prior to going her own way Lisa toured with Big Brother & The Holding Company.
She describes her style as blue-eyed soul and American Southern Roots. Whatever she does, it will send shivers up your spine!
